- Paper 1: AO1 80%, AO2 20%, AO3 0%.
- Paper 2: AO1 60%, AO2 25%, AO3 15%.
- AO1 Knowledge and understanding (facts, terms, concepts, policies, procedures and techniques, applied to accounting situations); AO2 Analysis (select, calculate and interpret data, analyse and communicate outcomes); AO3 Evaluation (interpret and evaluate information and draw conclusions).

Who sits 0452 in Malaysia, and how they enter
Cambridge is the board many international-school families in Malaysia know best, and 0452 is the A* to G version of its accounting qualification. Students usually enter through their school's exams officer, who submits entries to Cambridge. The 0452 syllabus itself states that private candidates can enter, and directs them to the Cambridge Guide to Making Entries.
Homeschooled students and adults retaking the subject normally enter as private candidates. The British Council Malaysia has a registration page for private candidates, and the British Council international schools site lists Cambridge deadlines for private candidates. Registration windows, fees and deadlines change each series. Please confirm the current ones with the British Council or your chosen centre before planning a timetable.
Cambridge runs the June and November series for this syllabus, which suits the school year in Malaysia. A March series exists only for schools in India, so the March thresholds you may find online are not relevant to a Malaysian candidate.
From the board's own documents:
- Private candidates can enter for this syllabus.
- Cannot be combined in one series with Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Accounting 0985 or Cambridge O Level Accounting 7707.
- Candidates can retake the whole qualification as many times as they want to.

Choosing between routes
If your school offers a choice between 0452 and 0985, the content is identical for 2027 to 2029. Only the grade scale differs: A* to G for 0452 and 9 to 1 for 0985. A student cannot be entered for both in the same series. Ask which scale the student's other subjects use, and which one the intended sixth form or college prefers to see.
Grading
- Grades A* to G.
- Candidates who achieve grades A* to C are well prepared to follow a wide range of courses including Cambridge International AS & A Level Accounting.

Topic by topic: 2026 compared with 2027 to 2029
These are the sub-topics where the wording of the two syllabuses differs. Topics not listed read the same in both.
- 2.1 The double entry system of book-keeping: The 2027-2029 syllabus adds digital ledgers and says accounts may be shown in a three-column running-balance format. The 2026 syllabus states candidates do not need to explain or use three-column running-balance accounts. Folio columns are not required in either.
- 2.2 Business documents: The 2027-2029 syllabus frames documents as produced and recorded manually or digitally. It drops the separate objective to complete pro-forma documents that appears in 2026.
- 2.3 Books of prime entry: The 2027-2029 syllabus lists payments by cash, cheques, debit and credit cards, online and bank transfers. It adds the benefits and limitations of manual versus digital methods, and of holding cash at the business. The 2026 syllabus referred to bank transfers and other electronic means.
- 3.3 Bank reconciliation: The 2027-2029 syllabus removes dividends from the cash-book updating list that appears in 2026. It adds the impact of digital business transactions on the reconciliation process.
- 3.4 Control accounts: The 2027-2029 syllabus adds the impact of digital recording of transactions. Both syllabuses state candidates do not need to reconcile control account balances to the ledger balances. The 2026 text also says control accounts that form part of the double entry system are not required.
- 4.2 Depreciation and disposal of non-current assets: The 2027-2029 syllabus states the three ledger accounts (non-current asset, provision for depreciation, disposal) explicitly. It also adds choosing appropriate methods for different assets, and names calculating profit or loss on disposal. The 2026 syllabus covered disposals with disposal accounts.
- 4.3 Other payables and other receivables: The 2027-2029 syllabus names the matching or accruals concept in the objectives. The recording tasks are unchanged.
- 4.4 Irrecoverable debts and allowance for irrecoverable debts: The 2027-2029 syllabus uses the terms allowance for irrecoverable debts and irrecoverable debts recovered. The 2026 syllabus titles the topic irrecoverable debts and provision for doubtful debts, and speaks of recovery of debts written off.
- 4.5 Valuation of inventory: The 2026 syllabus refers to preparing simple inventory valuation statements; the 2027-2029 syllabus refers to calculating the value of inventory.
- 5.1 Sole traders: The 2027-2029 syllabus speaks of statements of profit or loss and extends the business types to manufacturing and combinations. It refers to accumulated depreciation, and describes drawings as goods and other assets taken and private expenses paid. The 2026 syllabus uses income statement and provision for depreciation.
- 5.2 Partnerships: Both syllabuses exclude dissolution and changes to the profit-sharing ratio. The 2027-2029 syllabus also excludes limited liability partnerships and statements on admission or departure of a partner; the 2026 syllabus excludes admission or departure of a partner.
- 5.3 Limited companies: The 2026 syllabus describes preference and ordinary shares and says redeemable and non-redeemable preference shares should be distinguished. It excludes cumulative preference shares, rights issues, share premium and capital redemption reserve. The 2027-2029 syllabus describes the features of ordinary share capital and loan capital (debentures) and does not repeat the preference-share exclusions.
- 5.4 Manufacturing accounts: This topic is numbered 5.5 in the 2026 syllabus and 5.4 in the 2027-2029 syllabus because clubs and societies and manufacturing accounts swap places. The content is essentially the same.
- 5.5 Clubs and societies: This topic is numbered 5.4 in the 2026 syllabus and 5.5 in the 2027-2029 syllabus. The content is essentially the same.
- 5.6 Incomplete records: Both syllabuses limit incomplete records questions to sole traders. The 2027-2029 syllabus adds why businesses keep different kinds of records and states service and manufacturing businesses are not asked.
- 6.1 Calculation and understanding of accounting ratios: The 2026 syllabus lists eight ratios: gross margin, profit margin, ROCE, current ratio, liquid ratio, rate of inventory turnover, and trade receivables and trade payables turnover in days. The 2027-2029 syllabus lists ten by adding mark-up and inventory turnover in days, and states the printed formulas are the only ones accepted in answers.
- 6.2 Interpretation of accounting ratios: The 2027-2029 syllabus adds the reasons for the difference between cash and profit and widens improvement suggestions to include liquidity. The 2026 syllabus frames the gross and profit margin difference as an efficiency indicator.
- 6.3 Inter-business comparison: Renamed from inter-firm comparison in 2026 to inter-business comparison in 2027-2029. The 2027-2029 wording focuses on factors that affect the ratios and the problems of comparison.
- 6.4 Interested parties: The 2026 list names owners, managers, trade payables, banks, investors, club members and others such as governments and tax authorities. The 2027-2029 list names employees, suppliers and customers separately and adds public and environmental bodies.
- 6.5 Limitations of accounting statements: The 2026 syllabus lists historic cost, difficulties of definition and non-financial aspects. The 2027-2029 syllabus replaces difficulties of definition with the application of accounting policies and gives examples of non-financial factors.
- 7.1 Accounting concepts: Titled accounting principles in 2026 and accounting concepts in 2027-2029. The ten items listed are the same; matching is written matching or accruals in 2027-2029.
- 7.2 Ethical considerations: New in the 2027-2029 syllabus. It does not appear in the 2026 syllabus, whose 7.2 covers accounting policies instead.
- 7.3 Technology and sustainability: New in the 2027-2029 syllabus. The syllabus states that candidates do not need knowledge of, or access to, specific accounting software.

How we teach 0452
We teach the whole of 0452 one-to-one and online. The first thing we settle is the exam year. The 2026 and 2027 to 2029 syllabuses differ in Paper 1 length, ratio formulas and the final content section. A student sitting in November 2026 is taught from the 2026 syllabus; a student sitting from June 2027 is taught from the new one.
Because Paper 2 is 70% of the grade and is built on five 20-mark questions, much of our course time goes on full structured questions under timed conditions. We practise Paper 1 as a separate skill: reading each question stem quickly, and using the calculator for the short calculations the syllabus says the paper may contain.
Our one-to-one online 0452 tuition is taught by our experienced accounting teachers around your child's school timetable. Not sure how your child's 0452 papers are going? A one-hour trial class will show where the marks are being lost.
