The double entry system of book-keeping
The 5 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.
What students must be able to do
- Record transactions by double entry and post them to ledger accounts.
- Balance ledger accounts and transfer balances to the financial statements.
- Interpret ledger accounts and their balances.
- Recognise the sales ledger, purchases ledger and nominal (general) ledger.
- From 2027: understand ledgers kept digitally and ledger accounts shown in three-column running-balance format.

How our teachers teach it
Every later topic is double entry in a different costume. Our teachers insist on a fixed routine. Identify the two accounts and decide whether each is increasing or decreasing. Then apply debit and credit from the nature of the account, not from memory of "rules". Students who learn it as logic rather than as a chant are the ones who still get it right under exam pressure.
If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on the double entry system of book-keeping line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.
How the wording changed for 2027
The 2027-2029 syllabus adds digital ledgers and says accounts may be shown in a three-column running-balance format. The 2026 syllabus states candidates do not need to explain or use three-column running-balance accounts. Folio columns are not required in either.
Where it is examined
The double entry system of book-keeping can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.
