Edexcel's papers are weighted 66.6% and 33.3%, Cambridge's 30% and 70%, and OxfordAQA's 50% each, so the marks alone do not show how much each paper matters. The board pages give the weightings.
Series, weighting and private entry compared
The series decides when a Malaysian candidate can sit. The weightings show where the marks sit across the papers. Edexcel's 4AC1 and 4XAC1 are separate qualifications, so each has its own row.

Exam series calendar
These series are taken from the board documents we read. The board or the British Council confirms exact dates each year.
- Cambridge 0452 and 0985: June and November series. The March series is for schools in India.
- Pearson Edexcel 4AC1: January and June.
- Pearson Edexcel 4XAC1: June and November.
- OxfordAQA 9215: May/June and November.
For private candidates, the British Council's private candidates page describes the usual Cambridge registration windows: for the November session, registration opens around early August and closes for standard entries in mid-September, with late entries allowed until early October; for the June session, it opens around the end of November and closes for standard entries in late February, with late entries allowed until early April. These dates are approximate, so check the current ones before you plan.
Registering as a private candidate
- Choose the board, the syllabus code and the series, and confirm with the board or the British Council that you can enter that combination.
- Open the British Council private candidates page and follow its School Registration System steps.
- Have a valid passport or national ID ready. If the candidate is under 18, a parent or guardian completes the registration.
- Pay the exam fees shown in the system; the page says an application is not processed until payment is received.
- Keep your candidate notice, which confirms your venue and reporting time, and plan your revision timetable back from the exam date.
Check the British Council and the board for current fees and exact dates before you register. Our private candidates page explains how we teach the full course alongside registration.

What an exam board is, and why it matters
An exam board is the organisation that writes the syllabus, sets the papers and awards the grade for a qualification. For IGCSE Accounting, a Malaysian student is entered with one of the boards above, and the choice is usually made by the school rather than the family. The accounting underneath is the same whichever board you sit: double entry, the financial statements and the concepts do not change.
What differs is how each board packages and assesses it. The boards vary in the number and style of papers, the balance between multiple-choice and structured questions, the grading scale, and the wording and layout examiners expect. That is why exam-specific practice matters, and why we teach to the board a student is entered for.
How to think about the choice
If your child is already at a school, the board is generally fixed, so the useful question is how to prepare well for it. If the choice is yours, most often as a private candidate or a homeschooling family, decide on practical grounds. Which board can your exam centre or the British Council enter you for? Which grading scale matches your child's other subjects? Which paper style suits how they work?
We teach every board
Our team of experienced accounting teachers teaches all of these boards. Book a paid trial class and we will confirm your child's board and exam year, then build the preparation around them. Official documents behind every figure are listed on our Sources page.
