What we cover
0985 covers the same accounting as 0452 and differs only in the grade scale (9–1 rather than A*–G). Some schools prefer 9–1 so a student’s grades line up across subjects. We teach the whole course and explain what the 9–1 scale means for this subject.

Why families choose the 9–1 route
Schools that enter students for Cambridge 0985 often report all subjects on the 9–1 scale. Families often prefer this too. If English, maths and the sciences are reported as numbers, having accounting alone in letters can look odd on a transcript.
We teach the full course, and we make sure your child understands what the 9–1 scale means for this subject.
From worry to method
A numeric scale has more steps near the top. Capable students can feel that a good grade is not good enough, and that one careless error separates them from their target. That pressure can lead to over-checking, doubting correct work and running short of time.
We turn that worry into method. We teach students to build accuracy into how they work. Write the heading correctly the first time, place an entry on the right side without a nervous second look, and total a statement once and trust it.
When precision is a habit rather than a last-minute check, the finer grade steps feel like an opportunity. A reliably tidy student is the student the top grades reward.
Working alongside the school
At the start we ask which formats the school uses for ledgers and financial statements and how the teacher prefers adjustments shown. A student gains nothing from carrying two house styles. We then run in step with the school scheme, either consolidating the week's classwork or pre-teaching the next topic.
When marked work comes back from school, we work through those exact transactions and statements, using the student's own script. The class teacher sees extra help that deepens their method.
Private candidates on 0985
An independent candidate who chooses the 9–1 scale usually wants a consistent overall profile. They need a structured plan to match that goal. We map the whole subject at the start and put it in order.
First come source documents and double entry, then the books of prime entry, then full financial statements and end-of-period adjustments. We hold a steady schedule so nothing piles up.
We also remind families of the administration a school would normally handle, such as registering in good time and confirming the venue and what materials are allowed. A missed deadline is a real and avoidable risk, and part of what steadies these students is knowing the plan is under control.
What the first weeks look like
We begin with a relaxed diagnostic: a set of transactions and a simple pair of statements. The aim is to see the true state of the reasoning and presentation, not to grade your child. Then we write a short readable plan that puts the areas to strengthen in order.
In a session the student holds the pen and works live while we question and correct. We share the screen, annotate the same ledger and stop the moment a slip appears so it does not become a pattern. Later we watch for the errors that student tends to make, such as a reversed entry, an imprecise heading or a rushed depreciation or provision adjustment.
Then we drill them out. We bring in sensible time limits early, because finer grade steps reward a student who is both accurate and calm about the clock.
Reports in plain terms
After each session we send a short note: what we did, what went well and one or two things to practise. A parent without an accounting background can follow it. From time to time, we give a fuller picture of where the student stands, in terms of consistency and accuracy, which are what move a student up.
A student who understands double entry as a single system, has made accuracy a habit and practises full questions to time is well placed on the 9–1 scale. Steady practice between lessons is what turns this into marks. What we offer is a clear plan and steady, precise work.
