How the marks are weighted across skills

Every paper tests a mix of assessment objectives, which are the skills behind the marks. The board publishes approximate weightings. They show how much of the qualification rewards recall, how much rewards application and how much rewards judgement.

  • AO1 (knowledge and understanding) about 40 to 50% and AO2 (application) about 50 to 60%, in each paper and overall.
  • AO1 demonstrate knowledge and understanding of accounting principles, concepts and techniques; AO2 apply that knowledge and understanding.

Who sits 9215 in Malaysia, and how they enter

OxfordAQA is the newest of the four routes for Malaysian students, and fewer schools offer it than Cambridge or Edexcel. The specification says private candidates may enter examined components through an approved OxfordAQA centre, with prior agreement, or through the British Council. The British Council private candidates page lists OxfordAQA deadlines.

The specification states that exams are available in the May/June and November series, with first exams in May/June 2026. Registration timetables belong to OxfordAQA and the British Council, so we always point families to them for current dates and fees.

Because 9215 is new, there are few years of published past papers to learn from. Our teachers therefore build original practice in the style of its two papers. We use only the structure the specification publishes: a section of multiple-choice and short questions, then structured questions.

From the board's own documents:

  • Private candidates may enter examined components via an approved OxfordAQA centre with prior agreement, or via the British Council.
  • Students can retake the whole qualification as many times as they wish; individual components cannot be resat.
  • There are no previous learning requirements.

Choosing between routes

Compared with the other boards, 9215 is the only one of the four whose two papers are equal in length, marks and weight. Its content is split between the papers. Paper 1 assesses content sections 1 to 3 and Paper 2 assesses sections 3 to 5, so section 3 appears in both. If a school offers OxfordAQA, the choice is already made. A private candidate with a free choice should ask which centre can enter them.

Grading

  • Graded on a nine-point scale from 1 to 9, with 9 the best grade; below grade 1 is recorded as U (unclassified).
  • Each paper has a scaling factor of 1; the total scaled mark is 150.

How we teach 9215

We follow the specification's own structure. Paper 1 is about bookkeeping and verification, so the first half of the course is the double entry system, source documents, trial balance, control accounts and reconciliations. Paper 2 is about financial statements, so the second half builds sole trader, partnership, company, manufacturing and club statements.

The specification lists what is not examined. Examples are the FIFO, AVCO and LIFO inventory methods, admission and dissolution of partners, the statement of changes in equity and the provision for unrealised profit. We use that list as a revision filter so students do not spend time on content that will not be asked.

A typical course plan

Our teachers follow the shape of the specification when planning a 9215 course. The first block covers content section 1, sources and recording of data: the source documents, books of prime entry, ledgers and petty cash.

The second block covers section 2, verification, with the trial balance, the six error types, control accounts and the bank reconciliation. Both blocks are assessed in Paper 1, so we end the block with a timed Paper 1 style mock of 75 marks.

Section 3, the development of the accounting model, is assessed by both papers, so we give it a block of its own and return to it later. It brings together the concepts, depreciation, disposals, accruals and irrecoverable debts. Because the same ideas reappear in the statements of section 4, students who master section 3 find the second half of the course much quicker.

The last blocks cover section 4, the preparation of financial statements, and section 5, interpretation. Here the specification's exclusions list helps us, since it tells students which items they can safely leave out.

We practise one statement type per week. Then comes a mixed Paper 2 mock of 75 marks, with a Section A of multiple-choice and short questions and a Section B of three structured questions. Students also write a short appraisal of profitability and liquidity each week, so the nine named measures become familiar before the final revision weeks.

Our one-to-one online 9215 tuition is taught by our experienced accounting teachers around your child's school timetable. Not sure how your child's 9215 papers are going? A one-hour trial class will show where the marks are being lost.
