OxfordAQA 9215 · Section 3.5

Interpretation, analysis and communication of financial information

Stakeholders, ratios, appraisal, cash versus profit, limitations and the use of computers.

What the specification requires

These are the requirements for this section, paraphrased from the official specification.

  • Identify internal stakeholders (employees, management, owners and shareholders) and external stakeholders (customers, suppliers, government, lenders and the local community).
  • Calculate and interpret nine measures: gross profit margin, mark-up, rate of inventory turnover, profit in relation to revenue, ROCE, current ratio, liquid capital ratio, trade receivable days and trade payable days.
  • Appraise profitability and liquidity using statements and ratios, and explain the difference between cash and profit.
  • Explain the limitations of financial statements and ratio analysis, financial and non-financial.
  • Compare computerised and manual recording of accounting data.

How it is examined

This section is assessed in Paper 2, which lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 75 marks, worth 50% of the qualification.

Slips our teachers see most in this section

These come from marking student work in lessons, not from the board.

  • Using a formula from a different board's syllabus.
  • Appraising profitability but ignoring liquidity.
  • Forgetting the computer versus manual comparison.

If these slips look familiar, a teacher can go through your child's answers on interpretation, analysis and communication of financial information and fix the habit behind each one. Book a trial class.

A teacher's note

The specification names its nine measures but leaves the formulae to a separate guide. Our teachers give students the exact guide to use, not a formula from a textbook. After that the skill is the same as on other boards: calculate, compare, and make a recommendation tied to the business in the question.

Where this sits on the other boards

Our teachers' map of the same ideas in the other documents (an editorial mapping, with the official reference shown):

  • Accounting ratios: Cambridge 6.1 and 6.2 (p. 18); Edexcel Topic 4, item 4 (p. 21).
  • Ethics and technology: Cambridge 7.2 and 7.3 (2027-2029 only) (p. 20); Edexcel Topic 1, items 3 and 4 (p. 13).
