OxfordAQA 9215 · Section 3.3

Development of the accounting model

Accounting concepts, adjustments in the ledger, capital and revenue items, depreciation and disposals.

What the specification requires

These are the requirements for this section, paraphrased from the official specification.

  • Apply the concepts: business entity, money measurement, duality, historic cost, going concern, accruals, consistency, prudence, materiality and realisation.
  • Record adjustments: other payables and receivables, income due and received in advance, provisions for doubtful debts, irrecoverable debts, depreciation, disposals and inventory.
  • Distinguish capital from revenue expenditure and income.
  • Explain why assets depreciate, treat depreciation as a non-cash expense, apply straight line and reducing balance methods, and record disposals using a disposal account.

How it is examined

This section is assessed in both papers. Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes and 75 marks, and each is worth 50% of the qualification.

Slips our teachers see most in this section

These come from marking student work in lessons, not from the board.

  • Treating depreciation as cash leaving the business.
  • Studying recovery of irrecoverable debts, which is excluded.
  • Naming a concept but not the treatment it justifies.

If these slips look familiar, a teacher can go through your child's answers on development of the accounting model and fix the habit behind each one. Book a trial class.

A teacher's note

This section bridges recording and reporting, which is why it is assessed by both papers. Our teachers use it to show students that every adjustment is a concept in action. The specification's own list of situations, such as asset valuation and inventory, is a ready-made checklist for revision.

Where this sits on the other boards

Our teachers' map of the same ideas in the other documents (an editorial mapping, with the official reference shown):

  • Capital and revenue expenditure: Cambridge 4.1 (p. 14); Edexcel Topic 2, item 4 (p. 15).
  • Depreciation and disposal: Cambridge 4.2 (p. 14); Edexcel Topic 2, item 5 and Topic 5, item 2 (p. 15).
  • Other payables and receivables: Cambridge 4.3 (p. 14); Edexcel Topic 2, item 7 and Topic 5, item 4 (p. 16).
  • Irrecoverable debts: Cambridge 4.4 (p. 15); Edexcel Topic 2, item 6 and Topic 5, item 3 (p. 16).
  • Accounting concepts: Cambridge 7.1 (p. 19); Edexcel Topic 1, item 2 and Topic 5, item 1 (p. 13).
