How the marks are weighted across skills

Every paper tests a mix of assessment objectives, which are the skills behind the marks. The board publishes approximate weightings. They show how much of the qualification rewards recall, how much rewards application and how much rewards judgement.

  • AO1 35 to 40%, AO2 41 to 47%, AO3 17 to 20% of the qualification.
  • Paper 1: AO1 25 to 28%, AO2 23 to 25%, AO3 9 to 10% of the qualification.
  • Paper 2: AO1 11 to 12%, AO2 19 to 21%, AO3 8 to 9% of the qualification.
  • AO1 is knowledge and understanding of accounting terminology, principles, procedures and techniques. AO2 is selecting and applying that knowledge to accounting problems. AO3 is analysing, evaluating and presenting information and communicating reasoned explanations.

Who sits 4AC1 / 4XAC1 in Malaysia, and how they enter

Malaysian families also meet the Edexcel International GCSE. It is usually offered by schools that follow the Edexcel pathway, or chosen by students who plan to continue to Pearson Edexcel International AS and A Levels. The 4AC1 specification names International AS and A Levels in Accounting as a progression route.

The British Council's private candidates page lists Pearson Edexcel deadlines and describes online registration through its School Registration System. The 4AC1 specification lists January and June availability, and the 4XAC1 specification lists June and November.

Series, deadlines and fees are decided each year, so please check the British Council or your exam centre for current dates. Our teachers help families work backwards from the chosen series to a weekly plan.

From the board's own documents:

  • Colleges, universities and employers are very likely to treat two qualifications in the same subject as one.
  • Assessed in English only; students are recommended to read and write English at CEFR Level B2.
  • There are no prior learning requirements.

Choosing between routes

The big structural choice is linear against modular. With 4AC1 every paper is sat at the end of the course. With 4XAC1 the two units can be sat in different series and a unit can be resat on its own. Only the better of the two most recent attempts at a unit counts towards the final grade.

Pearson advises sitting the units in order for first entry. Which route is open to a student depends on the exam centre, so ask the centre first.

Grading

  • Graded on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1, with 9 the highest; below the minimum is an unclassified U result.
  • Grades come from the total subject mark; individual components are not graded.
  • Graded on a nine-grade scale from 9 to 1; below the minimum is an unclassified U result.
  • The qualification is reported out of 180 uniform marks; 0 to 17 is unclassified.

Linear or modular

  • Linear qualification: all papers must be taken at the end of the course of study.
  • Modular qualification of two mandatory units; units are advised to be sat in order for first entry, and resits can be sat in any order.
  • Learners can resit any unit; if a unit is resat more than once, only the better of the two most recent attempts counts.
  • Issue 1, August 2023; first teaching September 2023, first examination June 2024, first certification August 2025.

How we teach 4AC1 / 4XAC1

We teach the five topics in the order the papers need them. Paper 1 draws only from Topics 1 to 3, so our first block covers the accounting environment, bookkeeping and control processes. Paper 2 builds on those and adds Topics 4 and 5, so the second block turns to financial statements and end-of-period adjustments.

One real advantage of the specification for students is its precise content list. Limited company statements and clubs and societies are not in the 4AC1 content list, which lets us spend that time on partnerships, incomplete records and manufacturing accounts. We still point families to the specification itself so they can see the list for themselves.

Our one-to-one online 4AC1 / 4XAC1 tuition is taught by our experienced accounting teachers around your child's school timetable. Not sure how your child's 4AC1 / 4XAC1 papers are going? A one-hour trial class will show where the marks are being lost.

Papers, grades and comparisons

4AC1 / 4XAC1 questions we are asked

What is the difference between 4AC1 and 4XAC1?
4AC1 is linear: all papers are sat at the end of the course. 4XAC1 is modular: two units that can be sat in different series and resat individually. The content and the assessment objective weightings are the same.
How long are the papers?
Paper 1 (or Unit 1) is 2 hours and 100 marks. Paper 2 (or Unit 2) is 1 hour 15 minutes and 50 marks.
Is Paper 1 harder than Paper 2?
The modular specification says all assessments are designed to be at the same standard, with no step up in difficulty between the units. Paper 2 is more holistic and builds on Paper 1 content.
How is the grade worked out?
For 4AC1, grades come from the total subject mark and individual components are not graded. For 4XAC1, raw marks are converted to uniform marks, out of 180 in total, and the qualification grade is set from those.
Does the course include limited companies?
The content list in the 4AC1 specification names sole traders, partnerships, incomplete records, ratios and manufacturers for financial statements. It does not list limited company statements or clubs and societies.
Is the paper in English only?
Yes. Assessment is available only in English, and Pearson recommends students read and write English at CEFR Level B2.
