The trial balance, control accounts, correction of errors and bank reconciliation statements.

What the topic requires

These are the requirements for this topic, paraphrased from the official specification.

  • Explain the purpose of a trial balance, prepare one, and understand its limitations.
  • Explain the purpose of control accounts and prepare trade receivables and trade payables control accounts.
  • Identify and explain errors that do and do not affect the balancing of the trial balance, prepare journal entries to correct errors and prepare a suspense account.
  • Explain the purpose of bank reconciliation statements, understand the process and prepare one.

How it is examined

This topic is assessed in Paper 1, which lasts 2 hours and carries 100 marks. Paper 1 draws only from topics 1 to 3. Paper 2 also builds on this knowledge because it is more holistic.

Slips our teachers see most in this topic

These come from marking student work in lessons, not from the board.

  • Correcting an error that did not affect the trial balance through the suspense account.
  • Reversing the adjustment for unpresented cheques.
  • Leaving out one side of a contra entry in a control account.

If these slips look familiar, a teacher can go through your child's answers on introduction to control processes and fix the habit behind each one. Book a trial class.

A teacher's note

Control processes are about proving the books are right. Our teachers pair each tool with the question it answers. The trial balance checks the arithmetic of double entry, control accounts check the ledgers, journals correct mistakes, and the bank reconciliation checks the cash book against the bank. That makes the four topics feel like one story.

Where this sits on the other boards

Our teachers' map of the same ideas in the other documents (an editorial mapping, with the official reference shown):

  • The trial balance: Cambridge 3.1 (p. 13); OxfordAQA 3.2 (p. 12).
  • Correction of errors: Cambridge 3.2 (p. 13); OxfordAQA 3.2 (p. 12).
  • Bank reconciliation: Cambridge 3.3 (p. 13); OxfordAQA 3.2 (p. 13).
  • Control accounts: Cambridge 3.4 (p. 13); OxfordAQA 3.2 (p. 12).
