Books of prime entry
The 5 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.
What students must be able to do
- Process data in the cash book, petty cash book, sales and purchases journals, returns journals and general journal.
- Post from the books of prime entry to the ledgers.
- Treat trade discount and cash discount correctly.
- Explain the dual role of the cash book and apply the imprest system.
- From 2027: record payments by card, online and bank transfer, and weigh the benefits and limitations of manual and digital entry and of keeping cash on the premises.

How our teachers teach it
This is one of the recording topics where a tidy method earns the most marks. Our teachers drill the cash book as both a book of prime entry and a ledger account. Students then know which entries are posted from it and which are not. Petty cash with an imprest top-up is the other recurring trap, worth practising until the reimbursement logic feels natural.
If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on books of prime entry line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.
How the wording changed for 2027
The 2027-2029 syllabus lists payments by cash, cheques, debit and credit cards, online and bank transfers. It adds the benefits and limitations of manual versus digital methods, and of holding cash at the business. The 2026 syllabus referred to bank transfers and other electronic means.
Where it is examined
Books of prime entry can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.
