Limitations of accounting statements

The 3 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.

What students must be able to do

  • Recognise limits caused by historic cost.
  • Recognise limits from the application of accounting policies (2026: difficulties of definition).
  • Recognise non-financial factors, such as workforce skill, location and economic climate.

How our teachers teach it

Statements are useful but incomplete. Our teachers frame the limitations as three questions. What is out of date (historic cost)? What depends on choices (policies)? What is not measured in money at all (people, location, climate)?. That structure gives students a quick, safe plan for any evaluate question.

Mini-example: a delivery van after five years

A business buys a van for RM40,000. After five years the statement of financial position shows the van at its depreciated figure under the historic cost approach, say RM16,000. A reader might take that as the van's worth today, yet its market price could be higher or lower. That gap is the first limitation: figures are out of date.

The second limitation comes from choices. Two similar businesses can show different profits only because one chose straight-line depreciation and the other a different method, or because they value inventory differently. The statements follow rules, but the rules leave room for judgement.

The third is what the statements leave out. A skilled head chef, a good shop location or a strong local economy help a business but have no money value in the books. Under the money measurement concept only items measurable in money appear.

In an evaluation answer, name the limitation, say how it could mislead a decision, and tie it to the business in the question. For example: "Because the van is shown at historic cost, the bank may underestimate what could be raised by selling it."

If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on limitations of accounting statements line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.

How the wording changed for 2027

The 2026 syllabus lists historic cost, difficulties of definition and non-financial aspects. The 2027-2029 syllabus replaces difficulties of definition with the application of accounting policies and gives examples of non-financial factors.

Where it is examined

Limitations of accounting statements can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.

Limitations of accounting statements: questions

Do limitations appear in calculation questions?
They fit the evaluation tasks in Paper 2, which is where AO3 marks are available.
Does the 0985 (9 to 1) syllabus cover limitations of accounting statements too?
Yes. For examinations in 2027, 2028 and 2029 the 0985 subject content is word-for-word the same as 0452, so this sub-topic is identical on both. Only the reporting scale differs.
Which syllabus numbering should I use?
It is numbered 6.5 in both syllabuses: page 19 of the 2027 to 2029 syllabus and page 17 of the 2026 syllabus.
