Historical cost concept

The rule that assets are recorded at what they originally cost.

What it means

The principle that transactions and assets are recorded at their original cost rather than current market value.

Example

Premises bought for RM200,000 stay at cost, even if now worth more.

Why it matters

It makes figures objective and verifiable, though it can understate current values.

In practice

Historical cost sets the amount at which assets first enter the accounts and stay there. They are recorded at what was actually paid, not at a later estimated market value. A delivery van bought for RM40,000 stays on the books at RM40,000, with depreciation charged against that figure. This holds even if a similar van would now cost RM48,000. This gives objective amounts that invoices can support. That is its main strength.

Its weakness is that when prices rise, the figures can understate the current worth of assets.

Students often confuse it with prudence. Prudence can push an asset's carrying value below cost, for instance by writing inventory down to net realisable value. Historical cost fixes the starting point at the original outlay. Prudence may then reduce it, but never raise it above cost.
