Cambridge 0452 and 0985 · Topic 5
Preparation of financial statements
Income statements and statements of financial position for sole traders, partnerships, companies, clubs and manufacturers, plus incomplete records.
About this topic
The longest section and the one that carries the most marks. Students prepare complete financial statements for different kinds of organisation: sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, manufacturers and clubs, and work out missing figures when records are incomplete.

Both papers are based on all the subject content, so this topic can appear in either. For 2027 to 2029, Paper 1 has 40 multiple-choice questions, all compulsory in 1 hour 30 minutes (40 marks). Paper 2 has five compulsory questions of 20 marks each, based on stimulus material in 1 hour 45 minutes (100 marks).
The question verbs matter too. The syllabus lists command words such as calculate, explain, prepare and evaluate, and the marks on each part of a question tell you how much detail is expected.
Paper 2 carries 70% of the grade and its questions are based on all the syllabus content, with preparing accounts from information given named as a typical task. The skills in this section therefore carry a large share of the marks, and the adjustments from section 4 are applied here.

Slips our teachers see most in this topic
These come from marking student work in lessons, not from the board.
- Listing the assets of a statement of financial position in the wrong order, or mixing current and non-current items.
- Missing an adjustment that appears only in the notes under the trial balance.
- Running out of time because the layout was not practised until the exam.
If these slips look familiar, a teacher can go through your child's answers on preparation of financial statements and fix the habit behind each one. Book a trial class.
What changed between the 2026 and 2027 to 2029 syllabuses
- Sole traders: The 2027-2029 syllabus speaks of statements of profit or loss and extends the business types to manufacturing and combinations. It refers to accumulated depreciation, and describes drawings as goods and other assets taken and private expenses paid. The 2026 syllabus uses income statement and provision for depreciation.
- Partnerships: Both syllabuses exclude dissolution and changes to the profit-sharing ratio. The 2027-2029 syllabus also excludes limited liability partnerships and statements on admission or departure of a partner; the 2026 syllabus excludes admission or departure of a partner.
- Limited companies: The 2026 syllabus describes preference and ordinary shares and says redeemable and non-redeemable preference shares should be distinguished. It excludes cumulative preference shares, rights issues, share premium and capital redemption reserve. The 2027-2029 syllabus describes the features of ordinary share capital and loan capital (debentures) and does not repeat the preference-share exclusions.
- Manufacturing accounts: This topic is numbered 5.5 in the 2026 syllabus and 5.4 in the 2027-2029 syllabus because clubs and societies and manufacturing accounts swap places. The content is essentially the same.
- Clubs and societies: This topic is numbered 5.4 in the 2026 syllabus and 5.5 in the 2027-2029 syllabus. The content is essentially the same.
- Incomplete records: Both syllabuses limit incomplete records questions to sole traders. The 2027-2029 syllabus adds why businesses keep different kinds of records and states service and manufacturing businesses are not asked.
