Families often see two Cambridge codes for IGCSE Accounting, 0452 and 0985, and wonder what separates them. The content is the same. The grade scale differs.
Same content
Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452 and IGCSE (9–1) Accounting 0985 share the same subject content. A student learns the same accounting either way, so the code does not change what is taught or how hard it is.
Both codes cover the same topics in the same way. These include double entry, the trial balance, the trading and profit and loss account, and the statement of financial position. They also include control accounts, depreciation, adjustments for accruals and prepayments, bad debts and ratio interpretation.
Our teachers teach the identical course for both. A student moving between a class labelled with one code and a class labelled with the other would notice no difference in topics, vocabulary or question style.
Parents sometimes assume a different code hides a harder or easier syllabus. It does not. If a friend’s child sits 0452 and yours sits 0985, they study the same subject to the same depth.
Different grade scale
The difference is how results are reported:
- 0452 is graded on the traditional A* to G scale.
- 0985 is graded on the newer 9–1 scale.
Some schools prefer 9–1 so a student’s accounting grade matches other subjects graded that way. Others stay with A*–G. This is usually a school decision, and it is the main thing the two codes tell you about a candidate.
How the two scales line up
A common worry is how to translate 9 to 1 and A* to G for a parent, a scholarship form or a college used to one system. Broadly, the top of one scale matches the top of the other, and a mid-range grade matches a mid-range grade. The numbers are a different label for similar levels of achievement.
When you need an exact match, for example when a sixth form or matriculation office asks you to convert a grade, use Cambridge’s own published comparison. The exact boundaries are set by the board and can change. Our teachers can help you find and read the official statement.
You cannot sit both in one series
A student cannot be entered for both 0452 and 0985 in the same exam series, because they cover the same content. It is one or the other.
Private candidates sometimes imagine sitting one as a backup for the other. The entry rules do not allow this, and there would be no benefit. Choose the code your school reports in or, if you have a free choice, the scale your intended next step prefers.
Which will my child sit?
Almost always the school decides, based on how it reports grades across subjects. A school that reports everything on 9–1 will usually enter accounting as 0985 so the transcript is consistent. A school that reports on A*–G will usually enter 0452.
A private candidate with a choice often decides based on whether they or a receiving institution prefer 9–1 or A*–G. For the exact grade sets and current details, check Cambridge’s official pages. See our Cambridge 0452 and Cambridge 0985 pages and Sources.
A worked example (invented)
Here is a teaching example we might use in class. A sole trader, Aisyah, buys goods for resale costing RM4,000 and sells them for RM6,500. She pays rent of RM900, and RM300 of that rent belongs to the following period.
A 0452 student and a 0985 student would prepare exactly the same working. Gross profit is RM2,500. The prepayment adjustment reduces the rent expense to RM600, so net profit is RM1,900, which flows into capital.
The figures, layout and reasoning are identical. Only the letter or number on the certificate differs. These figures are invented for practice and are not from any real business or past paper.
Common mix-ups
First, some families think 0985 is a newer version that has replaced 0452. It has not. Both run in parallel, and the choice is about how grades are reported.
Second, some assume the code changes how universities view the qualification. In practice, institutions recognise Cambridge IGCSE Accounting and read the grade on whichever scale it is reported.
Third, a few students worry they will be taught differently depending on the code. The teaching is the same for both codes. If your question is really about the exam board itself, our Cambridge vs Edexcel comparison is the better read.
Does it change how we teach?
No. The content is identical, so our teaching is the same for 0452 and 0985. We make sure the student understands the grade scale their entry uses, so they can read their results and reports with confidence. See our Cambridge 0452 tuition and Cambridge 0985 tuition pages.
Not sure which code applies?
The school’s exams office can usually tell you quickly which code your child is entered for. The accounting your child needs to master is the same either way.
