Cambridge 0452 and 0985 · Sub-topic 1.1

The purpose of accounting

The 3 skills the syllabus asks for, the slips that cost marks, and how our teachers explain it.

What students must be able to do

  • Explain how book-keeping (recording) differs from accounting (reporting, analysing and advising).
  • State why a business measures profit and loss.
  • Explain how accounting information helps owners monitor progress and take decisions.

Official wording: Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452: syllabus for 2027-2029 (Version 1), page 11; Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452: syllabus for examination in 2026 (Version 2, December 2025), page 11. See all sources.

How our teachers teach it

Our teachers open the course here because it gives students a reason to care about the mechanics that follow. Book-keeping produces the record; accounting uses that record to answer questions: did we make a profit, can we pay our suppliers, should we expand? When a student can explain that difference in one sentence, definition questions in Paper 1 become easy marks.

Mini-example: one week at a market stall

Aisha runs a stall. Her notebook lists RM500 of sales, RM300 of stock bought and RM60 of stall rent for the week. Writing those figures down is book-keeping: it records what happened, one transaction at a time.

Accounting starts when Aisha asks questions of that record. Sales less the cost of stock sold and the rent gives a result for the period, which is how she learns whether the week made a profit. The same figures then answer a second question: is there enough cash to pay her supplier on Friday?

Notice that the profit is not the cash in her tin, because she has not yet paid for all the stock. An answer to a purpose question names the user (Aisha), the decision (whether to buy more stock) and the information that helps (profit and cash, kept apart).

Try it: list three decisions a stall owner could take from these figures, and write the one number each decision needs.

If any of these slips sound familiar, we can help. A teacher can mark your child's answers on the purpose of accounting line by line and show where the marks go. Book a trial class.

Unchanged between 2026 and 2027

The official wording of this sub-topic is essentially the same in both syllabuses, so students on either version can prepare in the same way.

Where it is examined

The purpose of accounting can appear in either paper, as a short question or as part of a longer task. Cambridge bases both papers on the whole syllabus. See the guides to Paper 1 and Paper 2 for the format.

The purpose of accounting: questions

Is this topic worth revising properly?
Yes. It is short, it is mostly definitions, and the same ideas return when students comment on results in section 6, so a clear understanding here pays off later.
Does the 0985 (9 to 1) syllabus cover the purpose of accounting too?
Yes. For examinations in 2027, 2028 and 2029 the 0985 subject content is word-for-word the same as 0452, so this sub-topic is identical on both. Only the reporting scale differs.
Which syllabus numbering should I use?
It is numbered 1.1 in both syllabuses: page 11 of the 2027 to 2029 syllabus and page 11 of the 2026 syllabus.
